Andy Bassich was born in  Washington D.C., United States on January 25, 1958. He was raised and went to school in Wheaton, Maryland. Andy had a youthful interest in the arts. He went to museums and other locations that captured his mind. He graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in 1976. However, he decided against pursuing fine arts or attending college and instead wanted to explore the nation. He also spent some time working as a carpenter and cabinet builder. And now that he's an adult, Andy has talked about his early life while also admitting that he didn't miss the commotion of Washington's metropolitan or suburban existence.

Andy studied trapping and mushing from a local trapper as he adapted to his new surroundings. He also obtained a Coast Guard Merchant Marine Captain License and spent 20 years as a riverboat captain.
