Andy studied trapping and mushing from a local trapper as he adapted to his new surroundings. He also obtained a Coast Guard Merchant Marine Captain License and spent 20 years as a riverboat captain.

Kate allegedly experienced emotional and verbal abuse. Strangely, their family feud was shown in the TV program "Life Below Zero."
