In an interview with Resilience Mojo, Lola Clay shared her funny story about how she got into the then TLC channel's hit show My 600-lb life. She got a call from one of the producers Micah Hatch from the show while parking her car with her mother. In the call the producer offered her to be on the show saying,

“Hi I'm Micah Hatch and I'm just calling to see if you possibly be available to meet with one of our cast members.”

After the conversation Lola’s answer was, “no I currently don't have any availability” to the producer and soon she hung up the call. Firstly, Lola was not so much familiar with the show and secondly, she was already occupied by the schedule for the next day, these were the top reasons she refused to be on the show in the first place.

Soon after getting the knowledge of the show My 600-lb Life from her mother she rescheduled the meeting with her few patients and called back to the same producer, Micah Hatch and let the production team know that she was available if they are still looking for Therapist. Soon after a few hours she got a call from a producer, Micah Hatch and her journey to the show began.

  • Struggle Story and Losing Mother Due to Cancer

Lola Clay is a successful author, speaker, TV personality, and wellness expert from Houston. Her mother, Emily Joyce Stewart Clay, was a wonderful mom who helped Lola overcome her childhood stuttering and inspired her to become a therapist. Emily was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in 2017, after months of misdiagnosis and ineffective treatments.

Months went by with Emily's symptoms not improving despite several attempts at therapy. The findings of the cancer test Lola insisted her mother obtain were horrifying. At the age of 76, Emily was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer despite no prior family history. Her physicians didn't first detect pancreatic cancer since her tumor was in a location that didn't produce jaundice. It was too late for surgery by the time they learned the truth. Emily had to endure a difficult treatment regimen. She found peace in meditation, prayer, poetry, and music therapy, and she wanted Lola and her two older sisters to keep pursuing their goals and not pause their lives for her sake. They even went on a family vacation to Las Vegas after her mom’s diagnosis so they could make more happy and lasting memories.

Emily refused to have radiation therapy after chemotherapy; she didn't want more treatment and was ready to die. Lola and her sisters had to accept that their mom was dying, that it was her choice to end treatment, and that she needed them to be calm and supportive. She decided to stop treatment in 2019 and spent her last days with dignity, strength, and grace. Lola and her sisters respected her choice and tried to cope with their grief. Lola advises other caregivers to take care of themselves and seek professional help if needed.

Lola Clay lost her mom, Emily, to pancreatic cancer in November 2019. She misses her mom's kindness, nurturing, and energy, and feels like an orphan sometimes. She also feels more empathy for her patients and friends who are going through similar struggles. She decided to channel her grief into raising funds and awareness for the Lustgarten Foundation, which supports pancreatic cancer research. She participated in walks, hosted an art show, and is now running a marathon for the cause. She encourages others to join her and find a community of support. She hopes to see more survivors and better treatments for this disease in the future.
