Controversies

Throughout its airing, "My 600-lb Life" has encountered a few controversies. In several instances, contestants and their families have charged the program with misrepresenting themselves and exploiting them. They contend that the show did not adequately portray their experiences and that their stories were changed to add more drama. Regarding the usage of participant photographs and medical information, the show has run into legal issues. For claimed carelessness during the recording and treatment process, or for unlawful use of their photos, participants have on occasion sued the production company of the program.

The lack of diversity among the featured participants has generated more controversy regarding the program. According to critics, the program mostly features Caucasian participants and inadequately portrays the struggles and experiences of people from different racial and cultural origins.

Lawsuits

A number of former patients of Dr. Nowzaradan, who appeared in the series, and the family of one patient, LB Bonner, who committed suicide, was reportedly suing the show's production company, Megalomedia, in 2018 on grounds of negligence and failure to pay for medical expenses.  Destinee LaShaee, the first transgender contestant to compete on the program, filed a lawsuit against it on the grounds that it failed to deliver the mental health services it had promised. She passed away on February 8, 2022, following the publishing of statements on social media that were "indicative of her depression and possibly suicidal thoughts."

Ten cases in all were filed, and on May 20, 2020, they were all combined into one case. Megalomedia requested summary judgment, but it was rejected because the court did not make a decision on it in the allotted amount of time under Texas law. Then Megalomedia challenged the court's decision on their motion. The 13th Appellate Court of Texas rejected all 10 of the cases on April 14, 2022.

Geno states that at the age of six, he weighed 100 pounds, 150 pounds at the age of eight, 200 pounds by fourth grade, and 300 pounds by the age of thirteen. He remembered difficulty in high school because his stature stopped him from fitting in areas where other high school students could. Geno did drop weight throughout his time with Dr. Now. Eight months into his adventure, he also had weight loss surgery. It was, however, a sluggish start because they had to relocate to Texas first.

Nico was pressured by his cousin, his family, and his doctor to reduce the weight he required in order to get bariatric surgery since his future was in jeopardy and his attitude was a little too casual for Dr. Now to like. Nico lost 129 pounds over their episode.

Latonya's support system on My 600-lb Life season 11 included her boyfriend Daune, her nephew Adrian, and her nanny, Virgie. However, each time the My 600-Lb Life actress saw Dr. Now, she gained weight rather than decreasing the requisite pounds to be considered for weight loss surgery. She only lost weight during the episode when Dr. Now hospitalized her for a severe heart condition and put her on a strict diet. Dr. Now informed her she needed to drop 60 pounds at home or he couldn't deal with her any longer. At the end of the episode, she had lost 43 pounds.
