Now they hunt for a different reason as they can sell the hides more than the meat. Troy is no different, and he was ready to handle the family business. Growing up, he joined his family in the Atchafalaya River Basin in Louisiana, where he learned the techniques of hunting and fishing. All about the Scary Gators and Brave Hunters: Swamp People

Louisiana has a lengthy history of alligator hunting. Since the 1800s, people have been economically collecting alligators for their precious leather. Throughout the 1900s, harvesting was essentially unrestricted, until a slow population drop resulted in significantly reduced harvests in the early 1950s. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) began a strictly restricted trial commercial wild alligator collection in Cameron Parish in September 1972. In succeeding years, other parishes were included, and the program became statewide in 1981. In Louisiana, nearly 2,000 licensed alligator hunters currently harvest 30,000 to 35,000 wild alligators each year. The concept broadens from there and there comes the reality TV show called Swamp People.

The main purpose of Swamp People is to document the day-to-day activities of alligator hunters living in the swamps of the Atchafalaya River Basin in Louisiana. The show provides a glimpse into the unique culture and traditions of the people who live and work in the swamps and highlights the challenges and dangers they face while hunting alligators. It chronicles the lives of numerous families who make a career collecting alligators in Louisiana's marshes.

Bernita had originally wanted Troy to buy his grandparents’ old home, but instead of renovating it, Troy decided to build a new home using cypress wood that he had collected from the nearby swamps over three decades. The spacious home has two kitchens so that Troy and Bernita can cook without getting in each other’s way. There is also a 12-foot cypress dining table that Troy has built himself.

The porch of the house offers a beautiful view of the bayou and sometimes even alligators can be seen sunbathing in their yard. The Landry's leave them alone as long as they don’t harm anyone. The family also has a camp at Lake Verret which is often the location for family gatherings on the show.
